Q: Are there different kinds of smoke detectors on the market?

A:  Yes.  Ionization and Photoelectric are the two different technologies on the market.  Ionization are the cheap ones you see advertised all over.  We do not recommend them.

Q: Are some better than others?

A:  Yes.  We only use Photoelectric.   Here is a good video to explain why by an independent news station.
